Boating is good for you, confirms new scientific study in Sail World!

But you already knew that!

Here is a great article we thought you would find interesting…The article is by Domenic Genua / September 27, 2020

“Dr Wallace Nichols… has shown getting out on the water in a boat promotes rest, with significant physiological and psychological benefits…

“His research includes the vast cognitive, emotional, psychological, social, physical, and spiritual benefits that we can all derive from healthy waters and oceans throughout our lives.

“Through his research, Dr. Nichols has identified that the mere sight and sound of water promotes wellness by lowering cortisol, increasing serotonin and inducing relaxation. Being on the water promotes physiological and psychological benefits that help manage trauma, anxiety, sleep, autism, addiction, fitness, attention/focus, stress, grief, PTSD, build personal resilience, and much more.

“His study in the US has shown that 84% of parents think their kids would be more likely to unplug from their phones and laptops on a boat trip versus a road trip…”

The benefits of recreational boating have been assumed for decades and now through some interesting and compelling work, it has been proven that boating is good for you.

The award-winning marine biologist Dr Wallace Nichols is internationally renowned for his study which, through a scientific evidence-based approach, has shown getting out on the water in a boat promotes rest, with significant physiological and psychological benefits. He has found that with our lives getting increasingly busy and stressed, boating is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

“West Marine’s mission statement is to outfit, educate and inspire boaters,” said Ken Seipel, CEO of West Marine. “Partnering with US Sailing on this new Olympic-class series is a great opportunity to inspire both current Olympic hopefuls as well as young athletes about to enter the sport with dreams of standing on the podium.”

The West Marine US Open Sailing Series offers an increase in high-quality Olympic-class racing for U.S. athletes with a long-term goal of attracting top-level international competitors to race in these regattas for years to come.

BRISTOL, R.I. (January 11, 2021) – US Sailing and host yacht clubs at spectacular sailing venues in Florida and California are thrilled to launch a new U.S. based racing and training series of Olympic-class regattas in 2021.

The West Marine US Open Sailing Series offers an increase in high-quality Olympic-class racing for U.S. athletes with a long-term goal of attracting top-level international competitors to race in these regattas for years to come.

US Sailing and the larger community of sailors in the U.S. has identified a strong demand for a racing and training platform based in the United States that serves to provide a runway to the Olympic Games for prospective athletes. With the 2028 LA Olympics on the distant horizon, it is essential for US Sailing to establish a consistent and predictable cycle for athletes to plan for on an annual basis.

US Sailing and event organizers are honored to have West Marine as the title sponsor for the new series. For more than 50 years, West Marine has been the premier retailer of sailing, boating, fishing, and paddling gear. The company is committed to providing the local sailing community and all boaters with the highest quality products and expert service, all while inspiring a new generation. West Marine has a long-standing history of supporting the sport of sailing with a focus on youth and young sailors who aspire to reach new heights.

This series of regattas allows US Sailing to provide more support for sailors at these events through advanced and in-person coaching, training, and data collection. The series will become an important part of the training plans for young sailors participating as part of the Olympic Development Program (ODP), a US Sailing initiative supported by the AmericaOne Foundation that provides world-class coaching support to promising American youth sailors competing in high-performance classes.

Two knock out stages.png

The event will see current America’s Cup Defender Emirates Team New Zealand, the Challenger of Record Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, INEOS TEAM UK and New York Yacht Club American Magic facing each other during four days of match racing on the Waitemata Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf widely regarded as ‘The jewel in Auckland’s crown’.

The first race will start few minutes after 3pm on December 17 and will the Defender Emirates against the Challenger of Record. The second pairing will be American Magic versus INEOS TEAM UK.

With each of the teams interpreting the AC75 design rule differently there are marked differences between all four boats launched so far and therefore great anticipation to see them race for the first time.

The racing format for the four days of racing has now been finalised. For the first three days of the PRADA ACWS Auckland (17th-19th of December) there will be four races per day of Round Robin competition when all of the four teams will race each other twice.

The fourth day (20th of December) the PRADA Christmas Race will kick off and will be comprised of two knock out stages, the first stage consists of two head to head match ups, the winners of each will progress to the final, the losers to a 3rd & 4th match which will help decide the final rankings. The pairing of the Christmas Race Semifinals will be decided by the results of the PRADA ACWS Auckland double Round Robin.

The races will be held on a windward-leeward racecourse with an upwind start and last around 25-30 minutes each.

Racing is scheduled for 1500 – 1800 each day weather permitting. The race course will be communicated on racing days by the Race Management depending on wind direction, intensity and tides. The permitted wind range is between 6.5 and 21 knots.

The America’s Cup Race village is FREE to enter and a great place to enjoy the action from, or soak up the village atmosphere. Depending on the course of the day, there are many vantage points around Auckland, from which the racing can be enjoyed while on land.

For the Challenger teams, the results from the ACWS and the Christmas Race regatta will determine the pairings for the PRADA Cup Challenger Selection Series to be held in January/February 2021 that will decide which of them will take on Emirates Team New Zealand in the Match for the 36th America’s Cup presented by PRADA starting on March 6th 2021.

180 Marine Delivers Corsair 880 Sport #3 into Pensacola, Florida

Screen Shot 2020-12-03 at 8.40.39 PM.png

This week we’re excited to sail the new Corsair 880 Sport in Pensacola, Florida. The final destination for this Corsair 880 Sport will be near Austin, Texas. We’re lucky the weather has been perfect for commissioning. Out of the box the 880 is BIG!

Our support team is AWESOME to work with at Advanced Yachtworks, Zern Rigging, Windcraft, Legendary Motors and Pensacola Shipyard. These trimarans don’t come out of the container ready to sail… there are many days of commissioning work to be done and 180 Marine has a great network ensuring smooth outcomes. As a Corsair trimaran expert Richard Allen has over 25 years of experience sailing and optimizing these amazing trimarans. Having state of the art equipment at the boatyard makes the job go smoother ie: a Marine Travel Lift with a 220,000 lb. capacity and a 14-ton mobile crane and a 4000 lb. 21’ long forklift boom make short work of it in capable hands.

180 Marine has many Corsair 880’s arriving throughout the U.S. in 2021 so what a great way to start the new year! Some will arrive via Pensacola, Florida and some will arrive via Los Angeles, California. We work hard to find the right fit for your sailing needs, and customize what's available until it's perfect for you. More Corsair owners have chosen 180 Marine this year than any other source.

We want to share the commissioning experience with you as the Corsair 880s arrive from afar. Enjoy these detailed images of the Pensacola delivery and first sail.

Folding and unfolding a Corsair trimaran takes only minutes. With just 4 bolts to remove, it is easily managed by one person, and is normally done while the boat is afloat. Simply raise (to fold) or press (to unfold) the inboard end of one cross beam - meaning it can be done from the safety of the cockpit. Only a little force is needed due to the folding system;s carefully balanced geometry and the floats movement being mostly horizontal.

Corsair trimaran training - San Francisco, California

Richard Allen enjoyed a delivery sail on a 2018 Corsair 760 Sport on San Francisco Bay. The boat was towed cross-country to a new owner this month. We had great wind conditions for a first sail, and this Corsair came all the way out west from Arkansas to meet its new owner. Michael has plans to sail in the bay with fellow trimaran sailors, Ross Stein and Rafi Yahalom, they are a couple of the most experienced trimaran sailors on the bay! That will help the learning curve…

This Corsair 760 Sport was customized for race-winning performance and easy cruising. Dealer mods include the primary and secondary control lines leading back to the cockpit. At 180 Marine we make a point to discuss deck layout with owners to optimize sailing efficiency for the sailing they enjoy most. There’s no single solution that’s best.

Nothing is underdone. The traveler purchase is increased from 3:1 to 4:1. The mainsail halyard is doubled from 1:1 to 2:1. The mainsheet is upgraded from 5:1 - 8:1. Making these changes offers easier trimming and lower loads on the lines. Bottom line is extending the the life of the rigging and a key benefit is trimming and tacking much smoother.

As speed increases so do the loads. After 10 knots it’s really nice to have extra purchase. Makes life easier on the crew and captain!

Tick tock, tick tock goes the clock

It’s so rhythmic it’s almost soothing. It lulls you into a false sense of security. Tick another coffee. Tock another meeting. Tick another lunch. Tock another quiet night in.

And before you know it, you’re so numb from the comfort of routine that you didn’t feel a thing as that great adventure called life slipped away like sand between your fingers.

But fear not, adventure has other plans. Roll with them! Embrace adventure!

The Big Why

Why do you do what you do?

Are you inspired by risk? Starting something you have no idea how to finish, witnessing people go for something new? Anything that has the potential for failure (but not a total disaster) gets your heart and creativity pumping?

“I really don’t know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it’s because, in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it’s because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea – whether it is to sail or to watch it – we are going back from whence we came. ” John F. Kennedy

Here are a few of our favorite stories of why we do what we do and how it shapes us.

180 Degrees South: Conquerors of the Useless

180 South: Conquerors of the Useless

Chris Malloy's film strikes so deeply into the heart of Patagonia's wilderness we come to feel at home there. 180° South: Conquerors of the Useless follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of his heroes Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia. Along the way he gets shipwrecked off Easter Island, surfs the longest wave of his life — and prepares himself for a rare ascent of Cerro Corcovado. Jeff's life turns when he meets up in a rainy hut with Chouinard and Tompkins who, once driven purely by a love of climbing and surfing, now value above all the experience of raw nature — and have come to Patagonia to spend their fortunes to protect it.

A Corsair 31 Circled the North Pole

In the summer of 2010 Skipper, Boerge Ousland chose to sail a relatively modest yacht, a Corsair 31 trimaran to explore the North Pole, a feat made possible by global warming and the melting of the Arctic ice cap. The lightness and the maneuverability of this multihull craft enabled the sailors to thread their way between the icebergs, to sail where other heavier and more keeled yachts (Corsair 31 has a draught of only 40 cm) couldn't go, and to draw the boat on to the ground when the need arose.

Now because Corsair trimarans are so versatile, they’re easy to fold, easy to trailer, fast and safe with a wide platform you might consider sailing one in Glacier Bay or sail from San Francisco Bay to Alaska and back with pets on board! Right?

We’d suggest sailing a Corsair 37 for longer voyages. The Corsair 37 offers all the comforts of a cruising monohull and the flat sailing of a big catamaran. It also has the speed, safety and unsinkability of a Corsair Trimaran. The Corsair 37 has an intelligently designed deck layout with halyards, topping lift, reffing and outhaul controlled at the mast. All other control lines aft to the cockpit for ease of sail handling and control.

The interior of this new and larger corsair brings more of the amenities you’ve come to expect from larger boats:  a functional yet spacious galley, ample cabinet and storage space, comfortable curved settee with seating for six, enclosed head with molded-in-vanity with sink and shower attachment.

Forward, a spacious V-berth easily sleeps two adults in unmatched comfort. Additional sleeping accommodations for two in spacious aft-cabin and the dining area converts into an additional bunk in the main cabin.

2019 San Diego NOOD Multihull Results

The 2019 Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta made a splash in San Diego over March 15-17 weekend. The NOOD Regatta San Diego was the second in a series of 5 national regattas and 1 international regatta. 180 Marine organized a fleet of six trimarans with skippers and crew!

Participants filtered in on Thursday and Friday, arriving from New Jersey, Missouri, Texas, Utah, Washington, Colorado, and Southern California. 180 Marine organized a race practice day on Friday to give sailing teams the opportunity to prepare for the one-day race on Saturday. Over the weekend, fleet members admired, boarded, and discussed multihulls ranging from F82R, F28, C31, and the newest designs the Corsair 970 and Corsair 760. New Corsair 760R owners, Michael, and Maureen Acker, raced with Richard Allen on the Corsair 760 and piloted their new spinnaker during the race.

Wind conditions were great, it was a beautiful day!

The trimaran fleet comprised of skippers with a wide range of sailing experience, seasoned and green crew, crew new to multihull sailing, and owners awaiting delivery of their own new Corsair. Mark Berdan generously hosted 3 boats at the Silver Gate Yacht Club. Mark Allen of Uinta Brewing Company was the beer sponsor for the NOODS and 180 Marine.

The NOOD multihull class began the race using a pursuit start just off Shelter Island in the San Diego Bay. PHRF ratings were applied to determine the starting order of the boats. Mark Berdan’s F82R was the first multihull to start, while JT Cody’s C970 was last to pass the Starting Line Committee Boat.  The North Sails Rally – Multihull class followed the Circle C – South Bay Course C, heading just east of Point Loma to round the windward mark before reaching south toward the leeward mark in proximity to the Naval Amphibious Base and Coronado Bridge. The course allowed the sailors to beat to windward, reach for a distance and run under spinnaker. Wind speed at the start was 3 to 5 knots and gradually built to 12 knots.

In the multihull fleet, Mark Berdan, of San Diego, helmed his Farrier F82R, Uneven Keel, to a race win. “We were really excited because we had six trimarans today, and we seldom get that many down here,” said Berdan. “ The Corsair dealer Richard Allen organized to get the boats here, so it was great having a fleet of our own out there. Congratulations to Mark Berdan and his crew on a first-place finish. View some NOOD regatta footage of Mark’s F82R (10:41 timestamp) and Richard Allen’s Corsair 760 (11:16 timestamp). While UnEven Keel finished first ahead of the other boats, the lead was tighter and changed numerous times for boats vying for the other finishes. For instance, Glen Hackemer, a crew member aboard Peter Lucas' Flexible Flyer commented, "I felt we got in sync as the race went on. We passed Callisto III on the second leg and had about a 3 minute lead around the leeward mark. The positions tightened up in the final leg when Flexible Flyer took a deeper course than Callisto III, causing our boat to overstand the finish and lose to Callisto III by 10 to 15 seconds."

Participation of a record number of trimarans in the North Sails Rally – Multihull class aligned with Sailing World’s original vision for the NOOD, which was to promote the growing interest in racing one-design keelboats. It also fulfilled 180 Marine’s goal to help multihull teams develop essential sailing skills and knowledge and to have fun getting to know the great trimaran community at the San Diego NOOD Regatta.

Thanks to all skippers and crew for traveling to this action-packed event. We hope you made some new and lasting friendships and learned some new boating skills along the way!

Big thanks to Betsy Hackemer and Leslie Gabriel for reporting on this fantastic event!

Happy new Corsair 37 owners from Park City Utah!

Corsair 37.png

We can't tell you how excited Kent and Cat were to see their new Corsair 37 for the first time, they are ready for their next big chapter! Both have sailing experience on beach cats and chartering a trimaran here and there. But now it's time for bigger and better sailing adventures! Once they gain enough experience on the Corsair 37 their plan is to sail south to the Florida Keys with many stops along the way in the Spring.

First sail was out of Bullocks Cove in Barrington, Rhode Island and it was a good one, we hit 14.5 knots, no problem!

The Corsair 37 offers all the comforts of a cruising monohull and the flat sailing of a big catamaran. Best of all, it offers the speed, safety and unsinkability of a Corsair Trimaran. The Corsair 37 features a shallow draft with retractable daggerboard and rudder for shallow water exploration.

The interior of the Corsair 37 brings more of the amenities you’ve come to expect from larger boats:  a functional yet spacious galley, ample cabinet and storage space, comfortable curved settee with seating for six, enclosed head with vanity, sink and shower.  Forward, a spacious V-berth easily sleeps two adults in unmatched comfort.  Additional sleeping accommodations for two in spacious aft-cabin; and the dining area converts into an additional bunk in the main cabin.

Experience a great way to decide to buy a trimaran!

Are you ready to experience a Corsair 760 trimaran?

This fast trailerable sailboat is currently in Oceanside, California. 180 Marine has two Corsair 760's and a Corsair 970 trimaran available for demos and training in Southern California. Guaranteed to have a blast and better than a boat show!

This 24' trailerable trimaran brings trailer sailing to the next level. Originating from the ever popular 24 and 750 range, this new model has received a radical redesign you'll love.

Did you know that the Corsair 760 trimaran won Multihull of the year 2018?

Here are a few reasons why.

All Corsair trimarans are built tough. They are well-known for their well-engineered construction. The large floats make this trimaran extremely stable even under sail.

You will notice effortless speed along with little heeling. That provides (moderately exciting) experiences for guests! All sail controls lead to the cockpit making it easy to operate when you are solo sailing.

Compact to trailer. Unfold and set-up in 40 minutes ready to launch. The set-up is simple and can be done alone, but it's more fun and easier if you have a crew or a buddy to help!

Corsair 760.png

Richard Allen, Trimaran Expert, will be in Lake Granby, Colorado on August 5, 2018 and Oceanside, California from November 4 - 10, 2018 to help you evaluate if a Corsair trimaran is right for you. You'll find that at 180 Marine we're friendly, seasoned, and willing to work hard to find the trimaran that is best for you. Hear What Happy New Pulse 600 Owners are Saying

Windshear's new home at the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center.

Milwaukee Community Sailing Center.png

This perfect home for the Corsair Pulse 600, the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center is located just north of downtown in the heart of Veterans Park at McKinley Marina.

July 19, 2019
“My Pulse 600 has been with me for 2 weeks now and it was wonderful. Richard came to Milwaukee Harbor to finish fitting her out and gave me some lessons. It was a joy to work with Richard and Leslie to find the right boat for me. It’s hard to describe my satisfaction with the Pulse without describing why I wanted it. To put it succinctly I wanted it because it looked simple to own while being safe and fun to sail.

The boat has exceeded my expectations on all fronts. I’m a lifelong recreational sailor and adventure traveler with a recent ‘race skipper’ certification at my sailing center. I prefer to just go out for a few hours and have a blast. What I realized when boat shopping is that I am in the best earning years of my life while supporting 3 fine young men at college, and I need to keep my foot on that gas pedal. But at the same time, I ain’t getting any younger as they say, and I love to sail.

The Pulse has all the modern engineering to make me and everyone around say ‘WOW’ while also being super simple to hoist off her cradle trailer, where she stays mast up, into the Milwaukee harbor and just thoroughly enjoy some time of pushing sailing to the limits.

My first day out I hit 16 knots and felt completely safe. I’ve been solo a few times and have had my kids and friends along. Everyone loves getting a ride on her and we get constant thumbs up and waves. Being dry-docked at a large sailing center, there are constantly people asking about her. I don’t seek it but I love the attention because it’s all about the boat, not me. And the conversations are great.

I can sum it up for me this way: When I turned 50 I bought a vintage Porsche 911 convertible that I always wanted. My boys said: “Dad, that’s a mid-life crisis car!” I responded, “Boys, everybody has a mid-life crisis. Some of us can do something about it. You remember that when you’re studying for classes.” And they get it. I guess the Pulse 600 is my ‘water Porsche’. She sure acts like one! And I didn’t buy it to take the family on a keelboat cruise. I bought it for fun.

Many thanks to 180 Marine for helping me feel young again, and how much is THAT worth when you’re grinding out family income all week.”

Gary

The 20-ton crane will help get more than 20 large sailboats into the water. The Pulse 600 is the first new trimaran in the area and hopefully, there will be many more to come!

A little bit about the 20' Pulse 600...

The Pulse 600 features lightweight carbon-reinforced construction and will get your pulse racing in even the lightest of winds. The Pulse 600 is a sports boat that is about pure fun… Designed for conveniently easy rigging and setup so you can quickly launch, unfold the floats and get out on the water. With modern reverse bows and high volume floats, even the most performance-oriented sailors have plenty to get hooked on with the smallest addition to the Corsair range.

The open cockpit is designed for a crew of up to four but can equally be sailed single or double-handed. Versatility is a key feature of the boat and the forward area provides enough storage and cover for day sailing/weekend adventures or can simply be left empty for go-fast racing. Family, crew mates or friends, it doesn’t matter with whom you sail.

Corsair Trimaran Performance Sailing Clinic - 2019

Randy Smyth coaching student

Randy Smyth coaching student

The 2019 Windcraft trimaran performance sailing clinic will be taught by Randy Smyth on May 18-19, 2019. (sold out) Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

We are very fortunate to have a world-class sailor, Olympic sailing coach and sailing movie “stuntman” Randy Smyth as chief instructor. Randy has a systematic, easy to use, approach to arriving at optimal sail trim, and he also has a host of personal experience to draw on which he shares willingly. Two other trimaran sailing coaches/racers/owners Don Wigston and Richard Allen will be assisting Randy. Topics covered in classroom presentations will be immediately be reinforced with on-the-water drills. Among the several positive aspects of the Performance Sailing Clinic which you might observe is the quality of the instruction, the patient onboard coaching from each assistant instructor, and the camaraderie among the participants and coaches stand out. When the group connects, good things happen!  The focus of the clinic is to help current Corsair owners learn to sail their own boats more efficiently, and for newcomers to sample the joys and thrills of sailing on Corsair trimarans.

Sailors will be coming from many different places (Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida) with different levels of experience will be meeting one another for the first time. Different levels of sailing experience in a group can sometimes cause frustration and potentially divide the group, but from past clinics, this has never been an issue.

The clinic covers a variety of topics from docking and anchoring, using tell tales to trim and steer for maximum speed, techniques for tacking and jibing, how to set up a spinnaker, spinnaker hoisting and dousing, man-overboard recovery, judging a starting line and more.

Even though some of the topics covered in the classroom sessions, demonstrations, and drills are very challenging for some of the less experienced participants, each sailor's skills will improve from where they were at the beginning to the last set of on-the-water drills. The spirit of team effort camaraderie helped each participant to make good on each tack, gybe or spinnaker set or takedown, thereby extending themselves and improving their skills and confidence.

Which underscores one of the great things about owning a Corsair trimaran--you become part of a friendly, supportive group whose members worldwide are constantly helping one another get the most out enjoyment out of their boats.
