Three teams from Colorado yacht clubs showed up to the second event of the Melges Winter Series hosted by Sarasota Sailing Squadron over last weekend. A total of 39 Melges 14 and 15 boats traveled to the the event in Sarasota, Florida, providing fierce and fun competition for our sailors. The warm sunshine and picturesque turquois waters served as the perfect venue while their home lakes back in Colorado were still frozen over. David Lubchenco of Grands Lake, Colorado made it a family affair by teaming up with his daughter on their M15.
The weekend culminated in one of the Colorado boats earning a podium spot.
Melges 14 Results:
Dirk Richter of Union Sailing Club sailed his Melges 14 to second place! Union Sailing Club is known for their dinghy fleets, and Dirk showed his club’s strength in that area on the Floridian waters.
Melges 15 Results:
Grand Lake Yacht Club had two Melges 15s representing the mountain yacht club—John O’Donnell & Will Crary and David Lubchenco & Nina Lubchenco. John and Will placed in the top 10 after starting with solid mid-pack finishes then improving through the weekend to earn a 5th, 2nd, and even 1st place finish in 3 of their last 4 races. David and Nina also had a solid performance over the weekend and placed 18th over all.
It is great to see Colorado Melges sailors traveling and participating in events, representing the Centennial State’s fantastic yacht clubs!
